This book is born of a long intellectual and
political engagement with the ideas of Antun Saʿadeh and a deep concern for the
future of our people. In a world dominated by economic globalisation, financial
monopolies, and neoliberal dogmas, national sovereignty is increasingly eroded
not only by military force but by economic dependency. For the Syrian
nation—which Saʿadeh envisioned in its broad cultural and geographic unity—the
need for a coherent, just, and independent economic vision has never been more urgent.
This work is an attempt to articulate such a vision. It draws inspiration from Saʿadeh’s fourth reform principle—calling for the abolition of feudalism, the reorganization of the economy on a productive basis, the realization of justice in labour, and the protection of national interests—and extends it into a comprehensive doctrine of economic nationalism. Through close readings of Saʿadeh’s writings, including articles and speeches from different periods and political contexts, I have sought to distil the foundational philosophy, ethical orientation, and practical aims of what I refer to as the Social Nationalist economy.
