Social Nationalism

Edmond Melhem
Saʿadeh proposed Social Nationalism as a forward-looking philosophy—one directed not only toward the future of Syria in particular, but toward the advancement of humanity as a whole. At its core, this philosophy affirms the principle of social interaction, standing in contrast to the fragmenting tendencies of individualism, capitalism, and socialism alike. It offers a new intellectual framework for addressing the deep-rooted social, economic, and political crises of modern society.

Social Nationalism is, fundamentally, a philosophy of “unifying interaction.” It seeks to restore harmony among human forces, bringing them back into a cohesive whole capable of building a more cooperative, just, and peaceful society. In doing so, it envisions a renewed path toward a better future for the human community.

Saʿadeh affirms:
“Our Social National Renaissance is not intended to satisfy fleeting desires or narrow particular interests. Rather, it aims to revive Syrian creativity and direct it toward contributing to the reconstruction of human society and the guidance of its progress.”

By its very national character, Social Nationalism is grounded in the principle of collective self-confidence. It seeks to dismantle entrenched cultures of fear, submission, and mistrust, replacing them with renewed confidence in people’s creative capacities. It calls upon society to reclaim agency over its destiny and to exercise conscious control over its future.

As Saʿadeh emphasizes:
“Nationalism is nothing but the confidence of the people in themselves and the reliance of the nation upon itself.”
