Part I - Intellectual Independence and the Rejection of Fascism Antun Saˈadeh, the SSNP, and the Myth of Fascist Influence

Edmond Melhem
Many people have claimed that Antun Saʿadeh and the Syrian Social Nationalist Party (SSNP) were influenced by fascism or Nazism. These accusations are common in political and academic discussions. However, they usually focus only on surface similarities, such as discipline within the party, emphasis on national unity, or the party’s symbol. They ignore the major differences between Social Nationalism and European fascist ideologies. When we read Saʿadeh’s writings carefully, it becomes clear that his ideas formed an independent project based on reason, social unity, justice, and peaceful relations between nations.

Saʿadeh repeatedly stated that his system was not copied from Europe. He explained that Social Nationalism was a purely Syrian doctrine, drawn from the history, needs, and realities of Syrian society rather than borrowed from foreign ideologies. For him, originality was essential. He believed that a real national revival could only succeed if its ideas grew naturally from the life of the people, not from imported theories that had no roots in society.

Another important difference concerns race. Nazism was built on the idea that some races are superior to others. Social Nationalism rejected this idea completely. Saʿadeh described racial purity as a myth and argued that nations are formed through shared history, common life, and social interaction. This position directly contradicts Nazi racial ideology.

There was also a clear difference in the role of the state. Fascist systems placed the state above society and gave it absolute power. Social Nationalism, however, viewed the state as a tool that serves society and works for the common good. Leadership, in Saʿadeh’s view, was not based on blind obedience or the idea of an infallible leader, but on institutions, responsibility, and competence. These principles clearly distinguish Social Nationalism from authoritarian fascist systems.
