Antoun Sa’adeh’s Vision (8) -The Characteristics of the “Suraqian” People

Safia Sa'adeh

Saadeh found that the “Suraqian” people constitute an Arab people distinct from other Arab peoples because of their environment and the interaction between the Fertile Crescent land and the population that has inhabited it.

Historically, it is well established that the peoples of the Fertile Crescent shared the same civilization, particularly one built upon agriculture and urban development. The pagan cultural heritage of "Suraqia" reflects the centrality of agricultural production in this civilization, evident in the religious rituals dedicated to the gods of rain, thunder, and fertility. It also demonstrates the civilizational path shaped by the region’s geographic conditions and by the people who lived upon it—very different from the civilization of a people who grew up in a harsh, singular desert environment, where there was no natural foundation for the rise of cities, sustained production, prosperity, or stability.

For example, the sun was perceived as a calamity in the desert because of its deadly heat, which is why it was feminized in Arabic. In contrast, the civilization of the Fertile Crescent viewed the sun as masculine, “Shamash.”

The environment of the Fertile Crescent produced remarkable cultural and scientific developments in antiquity: the construction of grand palaces reflecting periods of advancement and prosperity; technological progress and the invention of the wheel, which revolutionized agricultural productivity and commercial transport; the formulation of complex mathematical and geometric processes; the building of irrigation canals in areas that are now desert; the establishment of value systems for the exchange of goods (barter economy); the minting of currency; the invention of cuneiform writing on dried clay tablets, followed by the alphabet; the study of planetary motion and its relation to the earth and the four seasons; and artistic achievements in sculpture, painting, music, poetry, and mythology. The region also gave the world foundational legal systems, such as the Code of Hammurabi.
